In September 2025, MAGNA – Terex Corporation’s mobile crushing, screening and conveying equipment brand established two years ago to serve large-scale operations –appointed MMD as its distributor in sub-Saharan Africa.
Speaking at the official launch event on May 14, 2026, at MMD’s Pomona facility in Gauteng, Janis Lombard, Director at MMD Africa, said the decision to add the MAGNA mobile crushing and screening range to the company’s portfolio was driven by changing market demands in the mining sector.
Designed for high-throughput applications between 400 and 1 500 tonnes per hour (tph), the MAGNA range addresses the growing need for flexible, mobile processing solutions.
“In the contracting sector, project lifecycles have become much shorter,” says Lombard. “Large mobile plants such as those offered by MAGNA allow operators to process significant volumes quickly and move on to the next site, reducing setup and transportation costs.”
Lombard adds that junior miners are increasingly struggling to secure funding for large, bespoke processing plants due to structural changes in traditional project financing.
“Public equity markets increasingly view junior and mid-tier miners as high risk, making it difficult for them to finance new capital projects,” he explains. “Consequently, we looked at heavy-duty mobile crushing and screening equipment from MAGNA to fill that gap. The range can also help larger mining companies fast-track projects with a much lower capital outlay.”
Neil McIlwaine, Business Line Director for MAGNA at Terex Corporation, says the mobile crushing and screening market has evolved significantly over the past decade.
“About 30 months ago, Terex identified growing demand for high-capacity mobile machinery from customers requiring larger outputs and volumes,” says McIlwaine. “We therefore made a strategic decision to introduce a new brand at the larger end of the crushing and screening scale.”
The result was MAGNA, launched specifically to serve large-scale quarrying, mining, construction and recycling operations.
Strategic partnership
McIlwaine says MAGNA’s expansion into Africa required a distribution partner with strong expertise in materials processing, technical support and aftermarket service.
“MMD, a leader in mineral processing technology renowned for innovative solutions in materials handling and size reduction, ticked all the boxes,” he says.
By integrating MAGNA’s high-throughput mobile equipment with its established mineral processing technologies, MMD is now positioned to offer end-to-end solutions aimed at improving efficiency, reducing downtime and maximising productivity.
“The collaboration between MMD and MAGNA is a strategic alliance that complements each brand’s strengths,” says Lombard. “By adding mobile jaw crushers, impactors and cone crushers to our established range of mineral sizers, apron plate feeders and sizer stations, we can now deliver more comprehensive solutions to mining operations across sub-Saharan Africa.”
Lombard adds that MMD’s mineral sizers are particularly effective in wet and sticky applications where traditional crushers are prone to clogging and stalling. The addition of jaw and impact crushers expands the company’s capabilities in hard rock applications such as iron ore and manganese processing.
African support footprint
MAGNA benefits from MMD’s established footprint across Africa. According to Lombard, MMD has more than 500 installations across the continent, with a particularly strong presence in West and southern Africa and growing operations in Central and East Africa.
“We have experience in large mining systems, including semi-mobile stations with capacities of up to 3 000 tph,” Lombard tells us. “We also maintain long-term relationships with strategic customers such as Sasol, which has acquired about 50 of our units over the past 30 years.”
MMD’s technical and engineering capabilities are supported by design consultancy services in the United Kingdom, while its South African office provides localised element modelling, flow analysis and finite element analysis services.
The company also maintains six field service teams operating daily across the region, with dedicated on-site personnel deployed to key accounts. Spare parts availability remains a major focus, with MMD’s Edenvale facility carrying between R60-million and R70-million in stock at any given time.
“These capabilities place us in a strong position to support the MAGNA brand in Africa,” says Lombard. “We have already brought machine and spare parts stock into the region and invested in experienced service personnel who have undergone extensive OEM training.”
The range
Although the MAGNA portfolio is extensive, MMD is initially focusing on selected units within key segments.
On the crushing side, the company has launched the MT120J and the flagship MT130J tracked jaw crushers. The MT130J, currently the largest tracked jaw crusher in the MAGNA range, is designed for high-output quarrying and mining applications, delivering throughput of up to 1 000 tph.
“The MT130J’s electrically driven power systems provide significant cost and environmental benefits,” says Willem Pieterse, Director at MMD Africa. “Its large 1 300 mm x 1 000 mm feed opening also allows the crusher to handle oversized material while minimising pre-processing requirements.”
MMD is also introducing the MT400C cone crusher, designed to deliver high output, large reduction ratios and a consistent cubical product shape for aggregates producers and contractors.
The machine incorporates an 8 m³ hopper and feeder, an automated metal detection system and a purge chute to protect the cone and minimise unplanned downtime. Additional features include hydraulic closed-side setting adjustment with electronic monitoring, a fuel-efficient direct drive system via a wet clutch, hydraulic tramp relief with automatic reset, multiple liner configurations, cone overload protection and dust suppression.
MAGNA’s impact crusher range includes the MT130I, MT150I and MT170I, available in both open-circuit and recirculating configurations. According to McIlwaine, the machines deliver capacities of 600 tph, 900 tph and 1 100 tph respectively.
The company also offers an extensive screening range. One of the flagship models is the MT620 HR horizontal screener, designed for handling high volumes of sticky material and fine sizing applications.
Another key product is the MT6S scalping screen, engineered for high-volume processing in quarrying, mining, construction and demolition waste, recycling, sand, gravel, coal and aggregate applications.
Designed for demanding environments, the MT6S delivers throughput of up to 800 tph and can be fed by a tracked crusher, shovel or excavator. At the core of the machine is a 6,1 m x 1,8 m aggressive top deck screen and a 5,5 m x 1,8 m bottom deck mounted in a modular screen box configuration. Hydraulic adjustment allows the screen angle to be set between 14° and 18°, while the discharge end can be raised by 600 mm to simplify media access and replacement.
All stockpiling conveyors feature hydraulic angle adjustment and extending head sections to maximise discharge height and stockpile capacity.
The broader MAGNA portfolio also includes trommel screens, radial telescopic conveyors, track-mounted conveyors and roller grizzly screens, with some of these models available on order.
Financing and telematics
Beyond the equipment offering, the MAGNA range is supported by Terex Financial Services, which provides tailored financing solutions aimed at improving accessibility to large-scale capital equipment investments.
“With deep industry expertise and strong relationships with a respected panel of funders, Terex Financial Services enables us to offer flexible packages aligned with customers’ operational schedules and cash-flow requirements,” says Pieterse. “Financing solutions will be structured on a case-by-case basis and can include long-term rental or rent-to-buy options depending on project economics.”
All MAGNA machines are supplied standard with the T-Link telematics platform and a seven-year data subscription.
“Our T-Link telematics system enables customers to remotely monitor their MAGNA equipment in real time,” concludes McIlwaine. “Operators can track machine location, status and performance at any time.”
