Liebherr-Africa has reinforced its earthmoving equipment offering with the introduction of the R 992 crawler excavator, a next-generation 92-tonne (t) machine designed to deliver greater productivity, improved fuel efficiency and enhanced durability for mining and quarrying applications.
Replacing the previous R 976, the R 992 forms part of Liebherr’s latest crawler excavator range first unveiled at Bauma 2022. The updated naming convention aligns each model designation with its operating weight, making the range easier for customers to identify.
With an operating weight ranging from 85,8 t to 96,5 t and bucket capacities from 2 m³ to 6.8 m³, the R 992 is powered by a 420 kW Liebherr engine, providing increased power and productivity for demanding loading and excavation applications.
According to Tendayi Kudumba, General Manager: Earthmoving at Liebherr-Africa, the excavator reflects the company’s continued focus on delivering solutions that improve customer productivity while lowering total cost of ownership.
“The R 992 has been developed to meet the needs of contract mining and high-production quarrying operations where reliability, fuel efficiency and machine performance are critical. It combines increased productivity with lower operating costs while maintaining the durability our customers expect from Liebherr equipment,” says Kudumba.
Fuel efficiency was a key design objective during development of the R 992. The machine incorporates Liebherr Power Efficiency (LPE), a patented engine and hydraulic management system that intelligently coordinates the diesel engine, hydraulic system and electronic controls to optimise machine performance according to real-time operating conditions. The system can reduce fuel consumption by up to 10% compared with previous models while maintaining high production levels.
The R 992 also introduces Liebherr’s Bucket Fill Assist system, the first automation technology in the company’s hydraulic excavator portfolio. The optional feature combines an anti-stalling function with semi-automatic bucket filling to improve bucket fill factors, reduce operator fatigue and increase productivity, particularly in hard or blocky digging conditions.
According to Lavell Ruthman, Head of Sales: Earthmoving at Liebherr-Africa, the system also contributes to lower operating costs. “Bucket Fill Assist enables higher bucket fill levels, reduces cycle times by up to 10% and helps lower fuel consumption. By improving material penetration and reducing vibration, it also extends bucket life while enhancing operator comfort,” says Ruthman.
Operator productivity is further enhanced by the standard Modetronic hydraulic control system, which allows operators to tailor machine performance through four selectable operating modes – Fine, Efficient, Dynamic and Custom. The excavator also features a redesigned cab with a larger 9-inch display, together with new joysticks and foot pedals that provide more precise machine control and improved operator comfort during extended shifts.
Built for harsh operating environments, the R 992 incorporates a heavy-duty undercarriage, cast steel-reinforced structures and heavy-duty protective plates beneath the boom and stick to improve durability and maximise uptime. Optional continuous track guides further enhance machine reliability during intensive side-loading and operation on uneven terrain.
The machine has already demonstrated its capabilities in the field. The first two R 992 excavators delivered in southern Africa have accumulated approximately 1,500 trouble-free operating hours in a demanding South African chrome mining application, reinforcing the machine’s reliability and performance under challenging conditions.
