The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a trusted third party, validated Metso’s updated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets in December 2025, covering both short- and long-term goals. This recognition confirms that Metso’s climate targets are aligned with the latest climate science and the ambition to limit global warming to 1,5 °C.
The targets include achieving net zero across the value chain, introducing new customer-related goals and strengthening supplier engagement. This underscores Metso’s leadership in driving industry-wide decarbonization and innovations for water, energy and resource efficiency, as well as circular solutions.
Approved targets:
- Net zero in own operations by 2030
Metso will achieve net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 (baseline: 2019).
(Target set in 2021, now approved by the SBTi)
- Customer engagement
40% of Metso’s customers by revenue will have science-based targets covering the use of products sold by 2030.
(New target)
- Scope 3 reductions
Metso will cut GHG emissions from the use of sold products by 51.6% per euro of product revenue by 2030 (baseline: 2024).

- Supplier engagement:
40% of Metso’s suppliers by spend will have science-based targets by 2030.
(Updated target: Previous 30% by 2025)
- Net zero across the value chain by 2050
Metso will achieve net-zero Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 2050.

“Metso’s newly validated climate targets extend beyond our own journey; they are designed to empower our customers and suppliers to realize their goals as well. The updated targets are a direct extension of our ‘We go beyond.’ strategy and our commitment to being a sustainability frontrunner in our industry,” says Claudia Genin, Chief Growth Officer.
With Scope 1 and 2 emission targets that are among the most ambitious in our sector, we are setting a new standard for climate action. Through the Metso Plus portfolio, we provide solutions that help customers reduce energy and water use, improve circularity, and enhance operational efficiency. By enabling our suppliers to set bold climate targets, we accelerate the transition to a lower carbon value chain,” adds Genin.
These targets strengthen Metso’s sustainability agenda and support the development and sales of the Metso Plus portfolio. By choosing Metso Plus, our customers turn their sustainability ambitions into measurable performance gains, accelerating their own progress toward net zero, while improving efficiency and reliability and adding long-term value.
The commitment to net zero by 2050 underscores Metso’s focus on innovation and partnerships that enable sustainable growth. The new scope 3 and customer engagement targets reflect a shared journey, positioning Metso as the strategic sustainability partner. This opens doors for collaborative R&D and developing products and services that can reduce emissions globally.
Metso will begin reporting progress on these targets externally in Q1 2026. Scope 3 reductions will be reported on an annual basis.
