According to Stuart Potter, MD of Volvo Trucks South Africa, the truck is engineered to deliver outstanding performance while carrying heavy loads across the toughest terrain.
Truck in detail
The Volvo FMX features a robust chassis and suspension package engineered for durability, high payloads and dependable performance across all underfoot conditions. A high-strength steel frame with an 8 mm chassis and a 5 mm inner liner running from front to rear provides added reinforcement, enabling the truck to carry heavy loads with confidence in demanding mining environments.
At the front, a four-leaf parabolic suspension is purpose-built for quarrying and mining applications, delivering the strength and durability needed to tackle varied road surfaces. At the rear, the bogie is equipped with four-leaf parabolic springs in a two-axle configuration, supporting bogie loads of up to 38 tonnes.
For added protection and improved control, Heavy Mode is automatically activated when the truck detects a heavy load. In this mode, the vehicle’s maximum speed is limited to 60 km/h.

Key trends
Discussing the trends shaping the sector, Potter says the mining industry is undergoing a period of rapid transformation, with many operators adopting more sustainable production methods to reduce the climate footprint of the metals they produce. In many mining operations, diesel-powered vehicles remain a major source of carbon emissions.

A case in point is Volvo Connect, a platform that provides a single digital interface for fleet operators to manage trucks, trailers and other critical assets.
